Times of disaster frequently witness overwhelming outpourings of community assistance.  When needed, entire communities are quick to come to the aid of others in need, with spontaneous volunteers at times numbering into the thousands.  This has been seen time and time again across the country.  But this same spirit of fellow concern is also needed before disaster strikes.  Indeed, through showing such concern before a disaster, the impact of the event can be reduced.

But what can you do in your community in preparation for a disaster?  We hope you find the following suggestions helpful.

What you can do before a disaster to help your community

  • Take the issue of preparedness seriously.  The fact that your reading this information is an indication that you are concerned about preparedness.  Make preparedness a way of life.  By being informed, proactive and making preparedness your way of life, you may:
    • Eliminate or minimize the inconvenience of small scale problems such as black-outs and storms.
    • Eliminate or minimize the financial impact of a disaster
    • Be able to quickly locate vital documents if you ever have to evacuate with short notice
    • Know what to take with you if you ever have to evacuate with short notice

    • Be able to determine how your loved ones are if disaster strikes when you are in different locations
    • Be able to communicate with your loved ones when phones service is unavailable
    • Be able to render first aid to injured loved ones or neighbors
    • Have greater peace of mind

  • Discuss the issue of preparedness with community organizations
  • Take the necessary steps at home to be prepared for a disaster

  • Take a first aid class or read a first aid book
  • Learn CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
  • Become a CPR Instructor
